5 Ways To Prepare for Back to School

It’s not an easy transition from those relaxed summer days to a more demanding school schedule, but these 5 tips can help.

    1. Reset your child’s sleep schedule. Summer sleep schedules tend to be a bit more relaxed. To prepare for the early start times of the school year, the National Sleep Foundation suggests moving your child’s bedtime up by 15 minutes each day until you reach the optimal sleep schedule. According to the NSF, teens need 8-10 hours while younger kids may need 9-11. Adjusting bedtimes now can help make your child more well-rested and better acclimated to the school year.
    2. Start making your child’s day more structured. Adding more structure in the days leading up to your school’s reopening can help your child adjust to a busy school time schedule. Use visual aids to make a simple calendar outlining tasks and activities for the day and reward your child for completing them.
    3. Discuss any back-to-school anxieties. If your child seems anxious about going back to school, talking through these feelings can be a big help. Be supportive and encouraging in making your child understand that a little anxiety is normal.
    4. Purchase any needed supplies now. If possible, purchase supplies before school starts so that you are not scrambling to find items when classes are back in session.
    5. Be sure to schedule a back-to-school physical. It’s a good idea to have your child undergo a physical before the start of school and discuss any health concerns with your pediatrician. You can also ensure that your child’s vaccinations are up to date. Need a primary care doctor? Use our Find A Doctor tool to select one.
