With spring on the horizon, now’s the perfect time to check in and ask yourself how you’re feeling.
You’ve probably heard of the “winter blues,” but you may not realize that changes in sunlight exposure, temperature, routine and lifestyle can affect your mood during any seasonal transition — including winter to spring.
Here are six ways to balance your mood:
- Feel your feelings. Name the emotion you’re feeling. See if you can identify why you’re feeling that way. Be a friend to yourself (talk to yourself like you’d talk to a friend).
- Stick to a routine. Keep a regular schedule to maintain structure. Continue to see friends, family and colleagues to ensure you’re connecting with others, even if you don’t initially feel like it.
- Eat well. Nutrient-rich foods like those that are high in vitamin D, omega-3 fatty acids and protein can fuel your brain and your body and lift your mood.
- Move around. Exercising, or simply moving your body, releases feel-good chemicals in your brain. It also reduces stress hormones and can improve your sleep.
- Keep up with your hobbies. Even if your hobbies and interests don’t excite you as much as usual, they can still bring you comfort and make you feel more like yourself.
- Consider professional support. Therapy or counseling and medication are available to help. Reach out if you feel persistent feelings of sadness or loss of interest in activities for more than two weeks.
